This meetup is an initiative of the group Sustainable Community of Amsterdam (SCoA).
For those that are new to the group Sustainable Community of Amsterdam (SCoA), each MeetUp we focus on a different topic and come together to share ways to help us in our collective quest to a more sustainable life. We believe that gathering in a relaxed, informal setting creates the best environment for sharing and learning - think of it as a catch up with your friends.
It’s clear to everyone that the production and consumption of single-use plastics is out of control. Our households and our planet are overwhelmed with the amount of plastic that is being disposed. This has been the hot topic of the year and we are seeing many positive actions challenging plastic waste, from “Plastic Attack” collective citizen initiatives to governments imposing bans. This is great and very hopeful to see, but the work does not stop here. The change needs to seep into every aspect of our society including our own homes and our personal choices in order for it to be successful.
This is why our next MeetUp will focus on the simple, everyday choices we can make to minimize our plastic footprint and simplify our lives - to inspire further transformation within our homes. The event will be held at DIY Soap store, a fitting location for the plastic-free theme. Their organic skin and hair care products are sustainably packaged and are able to be reused for future purchases. Store info: https://www.diysoap.nl/en/
Erica Linger the founder of DIY Soap store will share her inspiring journey and the mission behind the store, after which she will do a brief demonstration on how to make your own natural deodorant.
Iwona Konopka, who is leading a sustainable, socially responsible, and natural way of living with her family here in Amsterdam will talk about how a minimalist lifestyle can positively influence a plastic free lifestyle. To learn more about her philosophy and lifestyle go to: http://communityofpositivechange.com/
Our wonderful member Beatriz Pineda, UvA PhD researcher, whose work covers urban environmental topics related to energy and food will help facilitate the discussion.
Dina DeHart, one of the founders of the SCoA, who has embraced the journey to live a more minimalist and low-impact family lifestyle, will share some practical tips that have helped her and her family get on the right track to reducing their plastic footprint here in Amsterdam.
We hope you can join us at DIY Soap, where complimentary tea/coffee and small snacks will be offered. It’s going to be a rich conversation with our community members. Come and share your experiences and learnings in hopes to inspire others to take fresh, new steps towards simplifying their lives.
